Anything that stomps on IE6 is a good thing. I can’t believe anyone still uses it, even on an old machine… but I suppose some people must.
I have never ‘compensated’ for it in web design. I always felt that it doesn’t help the situation to compensate for it. I *want* my sites not to work in IE6. Bury it!
